Linux VDS: choosing a distribution, first connection and security

The plans on this page are the Intel Premium VDS family. When you order, you pick the distribution from the operating system list; the choice costs nothing extra. For work that needs higher processor speed, the Ryzen Premium VDS and Ryzen 9 9950X plans offer the same list.

Which distributions can I order?

For a new project, choose a supported LTS release (e.g. Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12/13). Older releases such as CentOS 7 and Ubuntu 18.04 no longer receive security updates; use them only for legacy software that depends on them.

First connection: SSH

Once payment is confirmed the server is set up automatically; the IP address and first root password appear on your service page and in the activation email. Connect with the ssh root@IP command (port 22) from PowerShell on Windows 10/11 or from Terminal on macOS and Linux. If SSH does not open, you can reach the server's screen through the VNC console in the client area.

First steps after setup

  • Update: apt update then apt upgrade on Ubuntu and Debian, dnf upgrade on AlmaLinux.
  • Change the password: Renew the first password from the panel (8–14 characters; letters, digits and ! @ _ - .). Switching to SSH key login and turning off password login is safer.
  • Set up the firewall: Allow only the ports you use with ufw or firewalld; make sure the SSH port is open before you enable the rules.
  • Plan your backups: Automatic backups are not included; send your important files regularly to Cloud Backup storage with SFTP, rsync or restic.

How much RAM do I need?

Linux servers usually run without a graphical interface, so they get by on few resources: a single bot, a WireGuard VPN or cron scripts can run with 2 GB of RAM. We recommend 4 GB for a few websites with a database, and 6–8 GB and above for several services in Docker.

Don't want to manage a server?

If you only want to publish websites, the cPanel web hosting plans take server maintenance off your hands. If you use software that runs only on Windows, see the Windows VDS page.

Questions about Linux VDS

Do I get root access?
Yes, you have full root access to the server and install the software you want yourself.
Does the distribution choice cost extra?
No. The operating system choice in the order costs nothing extra.
Can I install Docker?
Yes, with root access you can install Docker and similar software yourself.
Can I change the distribution later?
Yes, you can reinstall with another template from the client area. A reinstall erases everything on the disk; back up your data first.
Are backups and snapshots included?
Automatic backups and snapshots are not available in the panel. Back up your data to Cloud Backup storage or with your own method.
Do you offer refunds?
Because the service is set up automatically once payment is confirmed, refunds are not issued; the only exception is an order that cannot be set up for reasons on our side. Details are in our refund and cancellation policy.
